Gary Potter, star of “Django Legacy” (gypsy jazz in the USA), is regarded by aficionados as one of the greatest jazz and country guitarists in the world. Regarded highly in the USA, Europe, Australia, South America and of course, throughout the UK, he commands the respect of his fellow musicians and for those who are lucky enough to see him are astounded at his technique.
His musical experience is extensive and covers jazz, blues, gypsy jazz, country, classical, pop and many other popular fields of music. He is known for his musical versatility, combining a melodic, lyrical, imaginative musicality with a perfect rhythmic sense. in the UK he is known as “the king of gypsy jazz and swing” and regarded as the best gypsy jazz guitarist.
Gary is completely self-taught, other than a few very basic chords shown to him by his father at the tender age of 10 years old. By the age of 12 years old he was appearing professionally in country bands and at 16 and 17 years old performed at Wembley Arena as lead guitarist. He was also voted best country guitarist on 2 occasions.
When he was 15 years old a friend gave him a Django Reinhardt record which changed Gary’s direction towards jazz and influenced his decision to make jazz part of his career. Country’s loss and jazz’s gain!
Since then, Gary has won many awards for jazz and is regarded by experts as one of the greatest guitarists in the world. He has appeared at jazz and guitar festivals throughout the UK, Europe, Australia and the USA.
Gary is also an accomplished teacher of music, taking in workshops and the role of jazz tutor at Dartington International Summer School in Devon, UK, aimed at both top-class jazz and classical students wishing to further their knowledge given to them from a musician renowned for his versatility.
